The war in Israel and Gaza, Damar Hamlin and Jeremy Renner were among the most popular trending searches of 2023, according to data Google released Monday.
The ongoing war was the top news trend in 2023, per Google, followed by the OceanGate Titan submersible that imploded in June and the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in February. Hurricanes Hilary and Idalia rounded out the top five, according to Google.
Damar Hamlin was the most-searched person in 2023, followed by Jeremy Renner and Andrew Tate. Athletes Kylian Mbappé and Travis Kelce rounded out the top five.
Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, suffered a cardiac arrest in a game in January against the Cincinnati Bengals and had to be resuscitated on the field. Last month he launched a scholarship honoring the medical team that saved his life.
Renner was crushed under a 14,000-pound snowplow on New Year's Day. Renner said on Instagram last month he's "been exploring EVERY type of therapy since Jan. 14," in a selfie of himself that appeared to show him undergoing red-light therapy.
2023 also featured some notable celebrity deaths, including Matthew Perry, Tina Turner, Sinéad O'Connor and Jerry Springer. Those four, along with Ken Block, were the five most-searched celebrity deaths of the year, according to Google.
Perry, best-known for playing Chandler Bing on the smash hit sitcom "Friends," died in October at the age of 54. He was found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home.
Google said it collected data for its 2023 search results from Jan. 1 through Nov. 27 of this year.
